Unsustainable fishing practices threaten the health of our oceans. The United Nations estimates that about three-quarters of the planet’s fish stocks are now fished to their maximum limits or are already exhausted.

We need strong fisheries management and serious local, national, and global policy change to protect our oceans. The other essential factor is consumer awareness, to harness purchasing power and promote sustainable stewardship of our oceans.

Nordic Naturals has been monitoring overfishing hot spots since our inception. We are always looking for ways to ensure that we remain informed and alert to the threat of overfishing. Nordic Naturals is aligned with leading marine researchers at the University of Tromsø in Arctic Norway, and we receive updated information about fish stock estimates every week.

SOURCED WITH AWARENESS
Nordic Naturals uses three fish species, none of which are endangered: Norwegian Arctic cod (Skrei), Pacific sardines, and Peruvian anchovies. Nordic Naturals’ fish are only harvested from abundant waters: our Arctic cod are harvested in Arctic Norway outside of Bodø, and our anchovies and sardines are harvested from the Southern Pacific Ocean.

Sardines and anchovies, given their short reproductive cycles, are considered ideal species for sustainability. Nordic Naturals also ensures that 100% of all fish harvested is utilised for human or animal consumption.

OVERFISHING HOT SPOTS
According to the Norwegian Ministry of Fishing and Scientific American, the current global overfishing hot spots and declining species are:

• Eastern Canada, Newfoundland, The Davis Strait, and Southwest Greenland
• Southeast America: The Falkland Islands and coastal Argentina
• The Atlantic Peninsula
• Antarctica (below South Africa)
• The Arabian Sea
• Southeast Australia

DECLINING SPECIES
• Swordfish
• Atlantic Cod (NOT Arctic Cod)
• Tuna (larger species)
• Groupers
• Atlantic Flounders and Soles
• Monkfish
• King Crab
• Salmon
• Shark (larger species)
