Three Nutrients Crucial to Eye Health

Watsonville, CA (August 30, 2010) Research has demonstrated that certain nutrients are particularly important to eye health. Of these, the omega-3 essential fatty acid DHA and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are among the most critical. Each of these eye nutrients plays a key role in protecting the eyes and supporting healthy vision but, most importantly, scientific research has shown that these three nutrients work in synergy, which means that their combined benefit is greater than the sum of their individual benefits.

Groundbreaking research has demonstrated that DHA from fish oil is the precursor of neuroprotectin NPD1, which supports cellular health and longevity. Oxidative stress is a major factor in age-related changes in eye tissue. In addition to NPD1, Lutein and Zeaxanthin are key biologically active retinal antioxidants. In fact, animal studies have shown that these carotenoids act synergistically to support internal repair systems that operate in response to oxidative stress and inflammation. Further verification comes from a new review, published online June 30th in Current Medical Research and Opinion (DOI:10.1185/03007995.2010.494549), that looked at the influence of dietary supplements on eye health and concluded that the science does indeed support supplementation with the xanthophylls lutein and zeaxanthin for ocular health.

A number of studies have also focused on the role of EPA and DHA in supporting healthy tear production and tissue moisture, and another double-blind, placebo-controlled study is currently underway at Ohio State University investigating the link between supplementation with Nordic Naturals ProOmega® and healthy eye moisture.
